Power Moms Represent 1 in 5 People Online

Thursday May 21, 2009

Moms are quickly becoming the stars of the Internet. A.C. Nielsen, the same company that measures ratings for network TV shows, has discovered "Power Moms" make up 19.2-percent of the entire online population. These women are defined as moms between the ages of 25 and 54 with at least one child under 18.

What's even more interesting about the research is how moms using the Internet can be divided into two groups. Nielsen found "Established Moms," ages 40-50 with at least three children at home, primarily use the Internet for online shopping. "Newbie Moms," ages 25-34 with one or two young children, mainly use the Internet for socializing with other moms through Twitter, Blogger and Facebook.

Moms do find common ground when it comes to household finances. Nielsen says the number one subject among moms online is how to save money.

This study is good news for all moms. It proves we're a powerful online group, whether we're shopping for deals or connecting with other moms.

Does the research describe how you use the Internet as a mom?
