The Fate of Jon and Kate

Friday June 19, 2009

Add another subplot to the Jon & Kate Plus 8 drama. Just weeks after the state of Pennsylvania slapped the TLC show with child labor law accusations, pictures of Kate Gosselin spanking her child are now plastered on the cover of In Touch Weekly.

This latest controversy arrives just as TLC is airing a "big announcement" promo for a one-hour special Monday. Mrs. Gosselin voices the promo, stating the family has "made some life-changing decisions" regarding their future. Early reports indicate the couple is getting a divorce.

We see celebrity couples break up all the time. But Jon and Kate are a mom and dad with a camera crew following their family's every move. They used to be just like us -- unrecognizable at the supermarket, able to go outside without having to duck paparazzi and never having to worry about waking up to find a picture of your spouse with someone else on the cover of a magazine.

With everything the Gosselins have been through, you have to wonder if they would take it all back to be your typical family just trying to keep the kids happy, fed and loved every day. Maybe they would still be at this same stage in their lives if we had never heard of them.

Only they will ever know. But it's sad to see a family unravel. Especially so publicly.

Update June 22, 9:52 p.m. Eastern: Jon and Kate first announced they would separate but by the end of the "Houses and Big Changes" episode, it was revealed the couple filed for divorce.

How has being in the spotlight contributed to the Gosselin family's problems?

They should have stopped the show a long time ago. You could tell their marriage was in trouble. I would hate to believe a reality show could destroy a marriage, but it sure seems they have let fame and money get in between their family values.

I agree with Lynn. They should have stopped the show before, and I hope they’ll stop it now. No amount of fame is worth tearing a family apart.

I never heard of the show until they had all these problems. It can’t help any couple to be in the public eye all the time.

I’m most upset for the kids who didn’t ask to be in the public eye. The little girl Leah will always know the picture of her mom spanking her was on the cover of a magazine.
