Getting Kids Involved in Charity Work at Christmas

My older boy has become quite the role model for everyone in our family. He's walked to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He's donated toys to Toys for Tots. He's triked to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He's filled a firefighter's boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

This year, he added ringing the bell at the Salvation Army kettle to his list of charitable acts.

Christmas is a great time to get kids involved in charity work. While they're helping others, children are also learning lessons in thankfulness and empathy.

There are so many Christmas charities that help children too. You can also check with local churches and charities to do everything from packing food boxes for less fortunate families to distributing toys to kids in your community. Or simply encourage your children to buy gifts that give back so their loved ones get beautiful gifts and a portion of the proceeds goes to a worthy cause.

I'm not sure what cause my 6 year old will pick to support next. But whichever one he chooses, we'll be right there learning from him through his generous spirit.
