By Apryl Duncan, About.com

Louisiana offers two sales tax holidays -- one for hurricane preparedness and one for back-to-school shoppers. A Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday took place May 30-31, 2009.

Neighboring states Mississippi and Texas do have set dates for their sales tax holidays.

Items Exempt from Louisiana Sales Tax

For 2009, Louisiana allowed tax exempt purchases for "tangible personal property for non-business use" up to $2,500 per item. The tax exemption applied to purchases made during the sales tax weekend if:
  • Possession of the item is taken immediately
  • The purchase is put in layaway
  • The purchase is already in layaway but paid off during the tax free weekend
  • The purchase is made during the tax free weekend but the store couldn't deliver the item immediately
