Neighboring states Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri and North Carolina offer sales tax holidays with different guidelines and qualifying items.

Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday Dates

August 7-9, 2009

Clothing Exempt from Tennessee Sales Tax

Clothing $100 or less is exempt for:
  • Belts
  • Caps and Hats
  • Coats
  • Dresses
  • Gloves
  • Hosiery
  • Jackets
  • Jeans
  • Neckties
  • Pants
  • Scarves
  • School Uniforms
  • Shirts
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Sneakers
  • Underwear

School Supplies Exempt from Tennessee Sales Tax

School supplies $100 and under are exempt as long as they are:
  • Backpacks
  • Binders
  • Book Bags
  • Calculators
  • Chalk
  • Crayons
  • Erasers
  • Folders
  • Glue
  • Lunch Boxes
  • Notebooks
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Rules
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Art Supplies Exempt from Sales Tax

Art supplies $100 or less are not taxable for:
  • Clay
  • Drawing Pads
  • Glazes
  • Paintbrushs
  • Paints
  • Sketch Pads
  • Watercolors

Computers Exempt from Sales Tax

Computers must have a purchase price of $1,500 or less for personal use. Computers for business use are not exempt.

A qualifying computer includes a central processing unit, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, cables and preloaded software. Monitors, keyboards, speakers and scanners not sold with a CPU bundle will be taxed.

Taxable Items

Hair accessories, sewing equipment and supplies, sporting goods, textbooks, recordable CDs and DVDs, electronic organizers, computer printers, printer supplies and software are among the taxable items. The Tennessee Department of Revenue has issued a full list of items not exempt from sales tax.
