Virginia's sales tax holidays apply to three different categories -- hurricane and emergency preparedness (May 25-31, 2009), back-to-school shopping (August) and Energy Star products (October 9-12, 2009). Dollar limits are per item.
Items put in layaway during the sales tax holiday are exempt from taxes. Items in layaway prior to the tax free weekend are not taxable as long as they are paid off during the tax holiday.
Neighbors North Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia also hold annual sales tax holidays.
