How often I update my Twitter status

four or five times a day.

Subjects I tweet that I wouldn't discuss in person

Actually, I usually tweet what I would discuss in person. In fact, since I am concerned about privacy, there is more I would say in person than in a tweet. Sometimes I might complain about a product when I wouldn't usually take the time to track down its maker. But otherwise, I tweet what I say.

The most memorable tweet I sent or received

I have been amazed by the power and outreach of twitter. When @anissamayhew, @mamaspohr or @laylagrace experienced tragedy, there was enormous outreach and help (even financial help) from twitter. I've also had some fun tweet conversations with a few celebs and shows like the @todayshow.

How Twitter has helped me as a mom

I have connected with other moms experiencing what I have been tweeting about. I have enjoyed other mom's funny tweets about children. I am always finding fantastic blog posts about parenting on Twitter. I've learned about product recalls or favorite products worth trying. I find out about local activities for children. Information is always up to the minute and I know twitter will have the latest updates about whatever it is I am interested in. Twitter is the perfect inside scoop on what people are talking about NOW. Twitter is also the ultimate word of mouth resource but on a massive digital scale.

What I have learned from other moms on Twitter

Where to begin? I've learned child rearing tips, what's typical behavior, where to find information, where to shop, what to buy or what not to buy. It's a positive supportive place assuming you know that the entire world can read what you tweet. The negative side has been some catty back and forth at times. I know things can be said that wouldn't be said in public. I haven't had a bad experience but I've known plenty who have. And I do recognize that twitter can be a "time suck" and there is the potential addiction to tweet every single thing you're doing. You almost become your followers personal reality show. That can be a bit much. Twitter is a positive thing, if used appropriately and with full regard of your own privacy and those you connect with.

Advice

  • Twitter is extremely informative & rewarding once you find a strong community of followers to connect with. However, it takes some time to get the hang of. It feels a bit "stalkerish" but that's ok. It's assumed a person's tweets will be read. They want response. And you should assume your tweets will be read & responded to. A cool example of twitter: My 6yo made a volcano for school & we used a video from "Science Bob's" website to make it happen. I posted the link on twitter after our success. And minutes later, Science Bob himself was following me. Twitter is a great way to connect & stay informed. Worth trying!
