Items placed in layaway during the sales tax holiday are exempt from taxes. Items picked up from layaway are also free from tax.
Neighboring states Virginia and West Virginia also hold back-to-school sales tax holidays.

August 1-9, 2009 - CANCELEDIn late July 2009, Washington, D.C., repealed its back-to-school sales tax holiday to save an estimated $640,000 in sales tax, according to Fox News affiliate WTTG in D.C.

Footwear Exempt from Washington, DC, Sales Tax
All shoes with a price of $100 or less are exempt except for roller blades, roller skates, skis and swim fins.Accessories Exempt from Sales Tax
