Back-to-School Savings Through Washington, D.C.'s Sales Tax Holiday

Washington, D.C., offers two sales tax holidays for clothing, shoes and accessories. Dollar limits are per item.

Items placed in layaway during the sales tax holiday are exempt from taxes. Items picked up from layaway are also free from tax.

Neighboring states Virginia and West Virginia also hold back-to-school sales tax holidays.

Washington, DC, Sales Tax Holiday Dates

August 1-9, 2009 - CANCELED
In late July 2009, Washington, D.C., repealed its back-to-school sales tax holiday to save an estimated $640,000 in sales tax, according to Fox News affiliate WTTG in D.C.

November 27 - December 6, 2009

Clothing Exempt from Washington, DC, Sales Tax

Clothing $100 and under is not taxable during the sales tax holiday, including:
  • Belts
  • Blouses
  • Coats
  • Dresses
  • Hats
  • Jackets
  • Pants
  • Shirts
  • Undergarments

Footwear Exempt from Washington, DC, Sales Tax

All shoes with a price of $100 or less are exempt except for roller blades, roller skates, skis and swim fins.

Accessories Exempt from Sales Tax

Traditional accessories $100 and under are eligible, such as:
  • Belt Buckles
  • Jewelry
  • Gloves
  • Handbags
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Hats
  • Headbands
  • Nonprescription Eyeglasses
  • Scarves
  • Ties
  • Umbrellas
  • Watchbands
  • Watches
