Saltwater fish
Easy entertainment for children. Fish are great starter pets to teach kids about the responsibility of caring for another life.
Aquarium maintenance takes time. Some fish also have short life spans, which makes it hard on your children.
What I Did:
There is a lot of money involved in setting up a saltwater tank. We started slow, but now have a large investment in our tank, lighting, filters and fish. If you're just looking to get a tank for the kids to enjoy, consider a goldfish or beta fish. They are much easier to take care of and don't require a large setup.
How I Did It:
Fish are very easy to take care of, and kids love to feed them. They are also fun to watch! We'll throw a blanket and some pillows on the floor in front of the aquarium and watch them swim around for hours as we snuggle up together.
Lessons Learned:
- For large aquariums, be sure you bolt the tank to the wall to prevent it from being climbed and tipped over.
- Let the kids pick out the fish at the pet store.
- Take pictures of your kids with the fish! Turn off your flash and open the windows for great pics.
